Breaking the straitjacket of routine accounting

In an article for July's
Insight, the journal produced by CIMA for its professional members, Robert Bittlestone urges management accountants to focus on management questions rather than the more mechanical aspects of their role.
"The routine processing of business data is delegated to computers and no longer occupies the agile and inquisitive mind of the management accountant. Our focus must surely be on diagnosing the causes of business success or failure rather than simply cranking the handle of financial reporting."
Bittlestone argues that "The questions that we are here to address involve the fundamental issues that drive our businesses". He goes on to suggest that management accountants "break open the straitjacket of routine reporting" and explore the opportunities offered by open-ended diagnosis.
